John Travolta Was Already in Love with Kelly Preston When Charlie Sheen Allegedly Shot Her

Actress Kelly Preston was known for her great talent and also for her incredible romance with actor John Travolta whom she married for almost three decades before her death last year.

Kelly Preston was a famous actress during her lifetime. After making her debut in the '80s, Preston found herself as the star of several movies, acting alongside some of the best names in the industry.

Part of Preston's life was her incredible relationship with fellow movie star John Travolta. Both enjoyed a unique relationship that endured several tragedies before Preston died from cancer in 2020.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

For almost 30 years, Travolta and Preston leaned on each other for support as they fought through their personal crisis, which included losing their son and Preston's battle with cancer.

The couple mirrored some of the best virtues lacking in most celebrity marriages, such as forgiveness in the face of infidelity, kindness, support, and resilience.

Although the duo met years before they walked down the aisle, they did not start dating immediately. However, Travolta nursed feelings in his heart for Preston the moment he set eyes on her.

The 67-year-old was crushed by love after seeing a sweet-faced Preston on the set of the 1989 comedy, "The Experts." At the time, there was only so much Travolta could do about his feelings as Preston was already married to actor Kevin Gage.

Although Preston was married, her marriage to Gage was miles beyond perfect. The actress once admitted that she felt the same way for Travolta since her union was an unhappy experience and she felt she was with the wrong person.

MARRIAGE WITH GAGE

Preston and Gage married in Hawaii in 1985, but like most celebrity marriages, they divorced after two years. Their marriage was marred by a series of troubles, and Gage was even arrested at some point.

According to reports, the actor was arrested after he was found in possession of drugs. Police officers were called to a loud party where they found Gage smoking a hand-rolled marijuana joint. At the time, the actor had already served more than two years in federal prison for growing marijuana.

OTHER RELATIONSHIPS

After her marriage to Gage, Preston did not immediately move into the arms of Travolta. The actress had other love interests and, at some point, was engaged to actor Charlie Sheen.

Preston was said to have dated actor George Clooney before Sheen, and after their relationship ended, she became involved in one of the most talked-about relationships of that time.

For many reasons, her relationship with the "Two and a Half Men" star proved to make headlines. The couple was considered controversial as Sheen was regarded as one of the bad boys of Hollywood.

The duo was spotted going out for some of the biggest events in Hollywood and was billed to be one of the most stylish couples. Sheen also made headlines when he proposed with a 2.5-carat pink diamond ring.

The ring was said to have cost about approximately $200,000, and Preston, who was in love with the ring, accepted his proposal. Unfortunately, things failed to work between the duo as Sheen was accused of shooting Preston, a claim he denied vehemently.

The shooting incident is widely believed to have led to the breakdown of their relationship, but despite that, Preston once spoke in defense of Sheen whose legal battles almost ruined his career.

DATING TRAVOLTA

After her relationship with Sheen ended, Preston was available again, and this time, it was with an old castmate, Travolta. Their romance was both intense and lovely, and it did not take long before the duo walked down the aisle.

On New Year's Eve 1991, Travolta asked Preston to marry him in Gstaad, Switzerland, with a six-carat yellow and white diamond ring. Soon after the wedding, the duo started planning to start a family together.

STARTING A FAMILY

After their marriage in 1991, Preston was conceived with their first child, Jett. Their son suffered a series of health challenges; he was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, which can cause inflammation of the arteries.

Despite the difficulty of raising a sick child, the couple stood together and expanded their family a few years later. Their daughter Ella Bleu was born in 2000 and has since walked in her father's footsteps, featuring in the 2019 film, "The Poison Rose," alongside her father, Travolta and Morgan Freeman.

GRIEF AND A MIRACLE

In 2009, while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas, Jett was found in the bathroom lifeless, and it was discovered that he had hit his head in a bathtub while having a seizure.

The news came as a huge blow to Travolta, who shared a close relationship with his son. The actor and his wife stuck together through their grief and credited their faith in Scientology in helping them bear the loss.

Two years after Jett's death, Travolta and his wife welcomed their third child, son Benjamin, who helped the family get through their grief. The couple considered the child their miracle.

In 2018, Travolta and Preston celebrated their 28th anniversary and spoke about the secret to their long-lasting union. According to the couple, staying young and prioritizing their relationship has been key to their success together.

PRESTON'S DEATH

A statement from the Travoltas noted that Preston had passed away on July 12, 2020, after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Preston's battle with the disease was kept secret, and she continued receiving her treatment in private.

In a statement, the 67-year-old husband of Preston extended his gratitude to the doctors who fought to save Preston's life alongside their friends. However, he noted that he would be taking time away from the spotlight to tend to his family as they grieve their loss.

Travolta and his family have kept Preston in their memory a year after her death. The actor continues to hold her in good light and ensures to keep his kids optimistic despite the many losses they have suffered.
